Description
This file contains typed and photocopied papers collected by Richard Langhorne for his M.A. thesis on aspects of 19th-century Yorkshire life. The papers relate to the hand-knitting industry, and refer to collections of knitting-sticks and needle-supports in museum collections, including the Whitehead Collection at the Castle Museum, York; Bolling Hall Museum, Bradford; the Museum of English Rural Life, Reading; Luton Museum; the Welsh Folk Museum, Cardiff; the Bowes Museum, Barnard Castle; and the Bankfield Museum, Halifax. Reference is also made to personal collections of these objects. The papers include a typed list of needle supports and knitting sticks (some of which relate to photographs held in LAVC/PHO/P) from North Yorkshire, and their provenance; photocopied typed papers listing types of needle supports and knitting sticks and their provenance; and typed papers on knitting sticks, domestic and commercial knitting in the North Yorkshire Dales and Wales, needles and needle-supports.
