Description
Ten fancy carved wooden needle supports from Teesdale (Durham), from the Whitehead Collection at the Castle Museum, York. The supports include an elm bladed support with initials S.G. (Sarah Gargate), star motifs, and tail-like blade base from which a clue holder could be suspended; a beech bladed support with star motifs, diagonal pattern on haft, and name E. Bevis (Emma Bevis); a beech chain support with clue holder dated Jan. 19 1840; a bladed support with initials T.B., tree motif, and six geometric chip-carved patterns; a French-polished bladed sycamore support decorated with pierced semi-circles; a mahogany brass-capped support inlaid with hearts and diamonds in yew and ebony; a bladed support with zigzag border pattern, aves of circles, six-pointed star, a natural form, and chip-carved square and diamonds; a support initialled M.B., with slot for belt or waistband; a bladed support with fish-tail shaped base, all-over pattern of circles with brass tacks, and initials M.A.S. in brass
tacks; and a sycamore bladed scythe with fish-tail shaped base, and chip-caved triangles and diamonds. Display labelled 13. Unmounted.
