Description
M.A. thesis which takes the activities, tools and equipment illustrated in George Walker's 'The Costume of Yorkshire' as the introduction for a study of such objects as they are represented in the museums of Yorkshire.
The thesis is divided into three sections, the first covering aspects of rural life (agricultural activities, tools and equipment, domestic crafts and occupations), the second, aspects of industrial life (the wool textile and cutlery industries), the third, customs and recreations (Plough Monday, Bishop Blaize, Midsummer's Eve, Riding the Stang, Knur and Spell). In addition to conclusions on the above, the thesis includes a general conclusion with comments on Yorkshire museums and Yorkshire folk life. An appendix includes illustrations and comments by Walker not included in the main text.
The black and white plates, pasted to sheets of paper, are a selection of images taken from Walker's book, and photographs of artefacts displayed in a number of Yorkshire museums.
