Description

Fifteen packages containing Lancaster's working notes. It is from these notes that he compiled his artificial collection of charters, bound in a number of volumes (MS401-11). Most packages contain notebooks with material from a variety of sources - when the document from MS401-11 has been entered in the notebook it has been crossed out in the notebook by a vertical line. The collection contains a number of first drafts and final copies of articles. Also press cuttings, correspondence etc and a translation of a rental of Nostell Priory, 15th century.

4. Notebooks containing transcripts, mainly from Dodsworth manuscripts

5. Notes on Arthington Nunnery, transcript of Claro wapentake subsidy roll 29 Eliz I, transcript of Rothwell rental (see Thoresby Society 24, 1919). transcript of article on Green family of Horsforth (see Thoresby Society 24, 1919)

6. Notebooks containing miscellaneous notes, mostly referring to North Riding families and townships, some press cuttings

7. Miscellaneous notebooks. Includes transcript of 1424 rental of Leeds (see Thoresby Society 24, 1919), notebook with references to families of: Haget, Turet, Catterton, Sakesprey, Marston, Crigglestone, Hammerton, Deighton, Wilsthorpe

8. Transcript of Fountains Abbey chartulary. Also transcripts of documents relating to Bridlington Priory - BL Stow Ch. 414, 435, BL Add Ch 20551, 20557

13. Working notes. Includes notes on Thirsk, draft copy of article on Arthington Nunnery and Pool, collection of notes regarding Wilstrop family and township

14. Notebooks containing: collections for history of Esholt Priory and cell of Nostell at Woodkirk [Ardsley], collectiosn for Leeds and district, folder containing notes for early history of Ripley, material on family and township of Walkingham

15. Large bundle fo notebooks and loose papers. Includes draft copy of article on Bramhope, possibly refers to article printed in Thoresby Society 9, 1899, transcripts relating to Kirkstall Abbey and Leeds dictrict - includes copies of deeds then in the possession of the vicar of Bramley. Also, miscellaneous notes on wapentake of Birdforth, translation of 15th century Nostell rental (see YAS Record Series 61), material for history of Wortley and Popley family of Popley, transcripts in tabular form of Book of Aids for wapentakes of Herthill, Howdenshire, Buckross, Ainsty, Liberty of Knaresborough, between Ouse and Derwent, Liberty of Ripon and Holderness.

16. Boxfile containing newspaper cuttings and correspondence.

Biography or history

WT Lancaster was an historian and Yorkshire Archaeological Society librarian. Most of Lancaster's articles were published in publications of the Thoresby Society.
