William Thomas Lancaster was born in Thirsk in 1848, the elder son of George Brown Lancaster and Roth Fawcett. He was educated at Clitheroe Grammar School, and on leaving school he joined the Thirsk branch of the Yorkshire Banking Company, later becoming manager of the Leeds branch.

On retiring in 1908 he became honorary librarian for the Yorkshire Archaeological Society.
