Biography or history

This ms was compiled by William Thomas Lancaster FSA, Hon. Librarian to the YAS 1908-1920

William Thomas Lancaster was born in Thirsk in 1848, the elder son of George Brown Lancaster and Roth Fawcett. He was educated at Clitheroe Grammar School, and on leaving school he joined the Thirsk branch of the Yorkshire Banking Company, later becoming manager of the Leeds branch.

On retiring in 1908 he became honorary librarian for the Yorkshire Archaeological Society. In addition to his duties as librarian he published abstracts of the chartularies of Fountains and Bridlington abbeys. Lancaster also published "Ripley and the Ingleby Family" and contributed to publications by the YAS and Thoresby Society. On his death (15 Nov 1920) he bequeathed £200 to the Thoresby Society and £200 plus the residue of his estate to the Yorkshire Archaeological Society.
