Description
A study of birth, marriage and death customs observed by the people of Shotton Colliery in the early part of the twentieth century, based on printed sources and recollections gathered by the collector during interviews with local people.
The study comprises two parts. The first, Background, contains chapters on the history of the village, religion in the village (Church of England, Methodist, Catholic, Salvation Army), and the appearance of the village. Part Two concerns christening, wedding and funeral ceremonies, and its three chapters are illustrated with photographs and personal recollections of informants. An Appendix contains photocopies of printed items and photographs relating to the three rites of passage, including a confirmation ceremony, Salvation Army wedding and christening, Certificate of Dedication, Cradle Roll certificate, baptism card and funeral card.
