David Bennett and Olive Bennett, of Shotton Colliery, discuss foodways, domestic and occupational customs: Sunday dinner, Saturday mealtimes, Sunday tea, Christmas food, Easter food; food for special occasions - christenings, birthdays, weddings (scrambling for hot pennies), funeral tea (ham and tea); local dishes; drink - home made ginger wine, ginger beer, herb beer, lemon barley water; senna pods; food for visitors; pig keeping - black pudding, bacon; bread making; salting herrings; blackberrying; collecting water for washing; washing clothes using a dolly stick and posh tub; wartime food (World War Two); ?kettle broth (Cornwall); coal deliveries; potato picking; seaside visits; father's food for work (collier); the death of miners - funeral bidders inviting people to attend, funeral clothes (colours, widow's weeds - grey); wartime food (First and Second World wars) - rations; wedding food during rationing; cinder toffee, toffee apples.
