Description
The box numbers refer to the 7 Stancliffe family boxes in Liddle. These relate to Percy Stancliffe and his sons Richard and George Stancliffe.
The file contains material from Richard Stancliffe's service during World War 1, archives relating to his personal life and a small amount material relating to his service in World War 2.
Box 1: letters sent by Richard from Ludgrove School and Eton to his parents, 1906-1914. The box also includes exam papers, Richard's school reports, newspaper cuttings relating to school events. There are letters sent by the school, Ludgrove's division list and calendar booklets and lists of clothing.
Box 3: contains a photocographic album with photographs from Richard's time at Eton. There are images of masters and pupils. Also contains photographs of the Eton College Officer's Training Corp.
Box 4: contains three hunting diaries. The first one is from 1910-1914, 1919-1927. It contains one photograph and a newspaper cutting. The second is from 1927-1931. It contains 10 photographs, a newspaper cutting and a blank postcard. There is a dried 4 leafed clover in an envelope pasted to the inside front cover. The third diary is from 1931-1939 and contains 3 photographs, 4 newspaper cuttings, 1 magazine cutting and 2 letters.
Box 6: contains letters written during WW1, see attached handlist. Richard writes to his parents regularly from 1915-1917. Letters which are undated have the envlope attached and can be identified by the postal date stamp.
Box 7: contains signal course book with notes and brief assessment of his abilities. There are also certificates of employment, a London Gazette, a few bills, two photographs, a pass for motor cycle only and a clinical chart.
The box also contains Christmas cards from 1914 and 1916. There are letters relating to the Royal Observer Corps, 19140-1944, and some miscelleaneous material which includes two photographic postcards of the Eton College O.T.C and magazines reporting on George V's silver jubilee and death.
Biography or history
Richard Schofield Stancliffe was born in 1895, the son of Percy Stancliffe and Ethel Stancliffe (née Rowland). He joined the Second Lifeguards as a Second Lieutenant in October 1914. Richard was promoted to Lieutenant on 12 June 1915. After the war he lived at Heaton House, Northallerton. In WW2 Richard served with the Royal Observer Corps. He died in 1959.
