Edmond Contal was born in Vézelise, France, the son of a doctor. He was educated at the Institution de La Malgrange, a Catholic high school in Nancy. He qualified as a lawyer in 1866 or 1867 and practised as avocat at the court in Nancy. He was a life member of the Société de législation comparée.
He had a lifelong interest in the history of Lorraine and was an active member of the Société d’archéologie Lorraine from 1867 until at least 1889. He probably died in Lyon in 1915.
