Description

The collection includes invoices for antiques bought by Cornelius Medvei a collector of antique silver. It also contains correspondence with F. A. Mitchell-Hedges.

Biography or history

Victor Cornelius Medvei, known as Cornelius Medvei, (1905-2000) was born in Budapest, Hungary. After his mother died he was brought up by an aunt in Vienna. There Medvei studied medicine under Julius Bauer and became his assistant. In the 1930s Medvei emigrated to the United Kingdom. After qualifying as a doctor he worked at the Metropolitan Hospital in London. Medvei later became the principal medical officer at the Foreign and Commonwealth Office. He received a CBE in 1965.


Medvei was a collector of antique silver and was a founding member of the Society of Silver Collectors, later known as the Silver Society. He was at one time the Chair of the Society.

Donated by Victor Cornelius Medvei's son, Cornelius Medvei, in 2021.
