Description

This sub-series contains project files and prepublication material relating to books, articles and speeches written by Herbert Read. Included in the sub-series are manuscripts, typescripts, typescript carbon copies, and galley proofs.

This sub-series highlights the diverse subjects on which Read wrote, and allows the researcher to witness Read's work in progress. Highlights of the sub-series include: a fair copy manuscript of poems from Read's first published collection Songs of Chaos, with illustrations by Read; the manuscript for Read's only novel, The Green Child; Read's own set of corrected proofs for his final Collected Poems published in 1966.

Also included are poems unpublished during Read's lifetime, and files of material for unrealised projects including The Beautiful and the Sublime, a child's guide to art.

System of arrangement

The files in this sub-series have been listed alphabetically by book or article title, by the archivist. Where material was filed together prior to deposit, for example in the folders titled 'Art', 'Literature', and 'General Topics', these folders have been kept intact, and their contents listed in scope and content.

Where prepublication material for a single book was found in several files or boxes these have been gathered together to aid discovery.
