Description

This series relates to Read's early and family life. It has been divided into 3 main sections:

1. Personalia

2-15. Correspondence with family members and associated material

16. Photographs

This series of personalia contains some of the earliest material in the collection, including a certificate of honour awarded to Read when he attended the Crossley and Porter Orphan Home and School in Halifax.

Read's correspondence with his family offers an insight into the private life and thoughts of a notoriously reticent man. Of particular interest is the correspondence between Read and his second wife, Margaret, nee Ludwig, which offers a vivid picture of intellectual and cultural life in Edinburgh and London in the early 1930s.
