These papers consist primarily of family photographs and portraits. Ludmila Mlada’s professional archive is held by the University of Surrey.

Biography or history

Ludmila Mlada (1918-2003) was born Dorothy Rosemary Olga Ludmila Young. She was the daughter of Pauline Ida Clough Young, and therefore niece of Dorothy Una Ratcliffe. She was a dancer, choreographer and teacher. She studied at Marie Rambert's school in the late 1930s, and in the 1940s toured with Ballet Rambert to Europe and America, and danced with Ballets Jooss. Her stage name was Ludmila Mlada, and she was also known as Ludi Horenstein.

Provenance

This collection primarily relates to items inherited by Mlada from ;1) Dorothy Una Ratcliffe's and that of the Brotherton/Ratcliffe family which DUR in turn inherited from Lord Brotherton or became associated with via her 1st marriage to Charles Frederick Ratcliffe 2) Mlada's mother's own connection with the Ratcliffe family.
