Description

Series containing catalogues, notes and records of the Pathological Museum of the Leeds School of Medicine.

According to the information received alongside the records when they were donated, there are a number of different series of catalogues in the collection which were created at various periods.

1. Firstly, there is a volume entitled "Mr T.P. Teale's Preparations".

2. There are then three volumes of a catalogue which was compiled c.1859 [LUA MED/13/5-7]. Specimens are catalogued with the letter code 'B' followed by a number.

3. A later series of catalogues of 13 volumes was compiled around 1900-1905 [LUA MED/13/8-20]. These catalogues have been separated into systems of the body, with catalogue reference codes as follows:

A: Bone

B: Skin

BB: Liver

C: Cardiovascular

CC: Haemopoietic

D: Respiratory

E: Alimentary (subdivided into):

EE: Liver, Biliary, Pancreas

EH: Hernia

EP: Parasites

EF: Forensic & Toxicology

F: Urinary & Male Genital

G: Female Genital

GG: Breast

M: Midwifery

Within this particular set of catalogues, next to the specimen entry the following numbers may be present:

- a number, often in red ink and preceded by the letter 'B'. This refers to the catalogue references in the c.1859 set of catalogues [2];

- a number with 4 or 5 digits, usually termed 'General Number'. This corresponds to entries in a numerical catalogue kept by the Museum which listed cases from nos: 5,000-12,000 [dated 18 March 1903-5 June 1978]. Specimens with a general number could be found in the Museum collection in 1995.

4. There are also a set of temporary catalogues, compiled c.1905-1910 [LUA MED/13/21-29]

5. Finally, there are a series of revised catalogues, compiled c.1931-1933, for some of the body systems (Alimentary, Liver, Circulatory), [LUA MED/13/30-34].

Around 1951, all specimens were reclassified with a new coding system, which was still in use in 1995.
