Biography or history
Derek Tipler is known to have specialised in Romany language/s - including Welsh Romany [he was a contributor to the Journal of Gypsy Lore Society and was involved in the translation of bibles into Kalderash]. He is known to have been employed by the BBC, spent time in India and was involved with early National Gypsy Council.
Provenance
These papers were originally filed under the Rev George Hall (1863-1918) Collection, [which similarly focuses on Gypsy and Traveller biographies and genealogies]. However as these items post date the life of Rev. George Hall these have been separated out (2017) as it is most likey that these were either a standalone collection[ perhaps grouped with Hall papers because of the subject matter] or actually that the Hall Collection was actually part of the Tipler Papers (and possibly acquired by Tipler in the course of his research). It is not clear on the origins of these papers but is also noted that Tipler had connectons with the early National Gypsy Council of which several items were deposited over the years (both directly from the NCG and via Donald Kenrick). [See related objects].
System of arrangement
Arranged by the archivist (in 2017) by correspondent (alphabetic order).
