The organisation aimed to tackle disability in a comprehensive and global way. Also it campaigned to empower disabled people living in institutions. UPIAS rejected the idea that experts could advise disabled people how to live. Other leading members of UPIAS included Vic Finkelstein and Ken and Maggie Davis.
