Biography or history

Bernard Gilliat Smith was a philologist who specialised in Romani dialects and a member of the Journal of the Gypsy Lore Society editorial board 1931-1967. His works included, a translation of the Gospel of St Luke into Bulgarian Romani for the British and Foreign Bible Society and " A Bulgarian Gypsy Folk- Tale." He was also stationned for some time at the British Consulate in Tabriz [Iran].

Provenance

These items were found unlisted with other unlisted material belonging to Angus Fraser. Most include a handwritten note, "from the library of Bernard Gilliat Smith." It is unclear if these were purchased by Angus Fraser or inherited via his role on the editorial board of the Journal of the Gypsy Lore Society.
