Description

Collection of (original, photocopies and transcriptions) press cuttings mainly referencing Gypsies and Travellers (Yorkshire and wider UK). Includes some references of European Roma. Collected and arranged by Robert Dawson.

Cuttings are mainly from local (Yorkshire) and national press. Each page includes name and date of publication from which the cutting is taken from.

Includes some extracts from "Romano Drom" [Gypsy Council publication] in English and French.

Biography or history

The cuttings provide a record of reports in the national and Yorkshire Press from around the time of the introduction of the Caravan Sites Act (1968). The stationary used to mount and collate many of these cutting have reference to "West Yorkshire Constabulary," [e.g. letterheads] - suggesting it was at this time that Dawson was perhaps working as a specialist crime reporter.

Provenance

Originally part of the Romany(2) Collection - all items have the Dorothy Una Ratcliffe Romany Collection bokplate attached.

System of arrangement

These are subdivided into an album and multiple folders with a single page number sequence that runs throughout the collection (as per original order). Each section [folder]is mainly in chronological order.
