Biography or history

John Thomas Whetton was born in 1894 in New Fryston, near Castleford. During WW1 He was a member of the 8th Battalion King's Own Scottish Borderers. He was seriously wounded by shrapnel at the Somme in 1916, sent to officer training school and transferred to the 6th Battalion Yorkshire Regiment. After the war he returned to his job as a coal miner and in 1920 began a degree in mining engineering at the University of Leeds. This was followed by a master's degree in 1923. During WW2 he was involved in the historic Battle of El Alamein, the invasion of Sicily in 1943 and the D-Day landings. After WW2 he returned to the University of Leeds, becoming a Professor of Mining. He was later Pro-Vice-Chancellor of the University.
