George Codd [continued from tape LAVC/SRE/A557r], recorded in Barton-upon-Humber; talks about the extent of his commercial sailing experience; preference for river over canal work; racing to deliver cargoes; preference for working close to home; types of loads carried; working with the river tides; running aground; shifting nature of the river (channels and sandbanks); waiting for the flood tide; river tides - neap, spring (each with ebb and flood tide); the River Trent. Harry Hill, recorded in Winterton, gives biographical details of his childhood; schooling and errand boy at the age of ten; trading eggs and butter; buttermaking; farm work - pitching potatoes and making bands, pulling beans; work as a doctor's groom; bricklaying and farm buildings - importance of a brick floor in a cow stall; retirement.
