Description
George Howson, recorded at Barton-upon-Humber, describes working as a fire man on commercial freight river boats sailing from Ferriby Sluice; names the boats sailing from this point to locations in Hull, Goole and Ferriby; sleeping on board ship with his uncle at Goole; boatman's wages; death of workmate; Gainsborough boats running to Hull up the River Trent (names boats working in the period around 1901); describes fly boats (pulled by horses); lists the names of carriers who came to Ferriby Sluice on market day; describes a boat collision; fishing matches; moonlight trips. John Kitchen, recorded at Winterton, describes his job as flagman at Scotter Common; working on the land; ploughing; four sets of ploughmen working different areas of the county, using stationary steam engines to drag and plough; wages; driver at seventeen, paid three pence an acre; standing wage of twelve shillings, irrespective of the work done; travelling to work in Gainsborough; winter jobs; mechanical break downs and repairs; employment situation during World War One - Grimsby Court tribunal and his appeal for dragmen to work with him.
