Description
Helen McEwan and her two sisters, recorded in New Cross on the 30 August 1973; sing a number of popular songs (unaccompanied); talk also about where and when they learned them (family evenings); preference for humorous songs; songs about local pub and trams; song parodies. Songs include 'Two Little Girls in Blue', 'The Mother's Dirge' and 'Boiled Beef and Carrots'. [Tr. 7]
Two informants from an Old People's Home in Bexleyheath, recorded on the 3 September 1973; sing a number of popular songs, including one sung around the time of King Edward VII's death; talk also of singing socially in Sheffield. [Tr. 8; Tr. 1]
Alec Henry, recorded at home in Bexleyheath on the 10 September 1973, sings a medley of East End nonsense songs from seventy years ago - subjects include the Boer War, the General Election (c. 1907), condemned mercenaries; sings other songs (some fragments only); preference for sentimental songs - sings with prompting from his wife; song parody (World War One); discusses singing 'Barbara Allen'as a child, and his understanding of the words; Mrs. Alec Henrysings; AH's niece, Alice, sings (some with AH). Songs include 'Dapper Dan', 'Little Nell', 'Sonny Boy', 'Pennies from Heaven' and 'Sweet Aveline'.
