Description

This subfonds contains both original and master copy fieldwork recordings, made primarily in England by fieldworkers collecting dialect data for the country-wide English Dialect Survey (later published in printed form as the Survey of English Dialects), language and folk life students studying at the University of Leeds, and non-Leeds students and others pursuing individual research interests through (or independently from) other British/overseas educational institutions.

Provenance

The majority of the dialect survey recordings are held on gramophone discs, as are recordings which predate the Survey, made in the North East of England by Harold Orton. Student and non-student recordings are generally held on open reel and cassette formats. This series also includes some access copy CDs of sample content from oral history interviews and the LAVC conference in 2005.

System of arrangement

The disc/tape format distinction is reflected in the arrangement of the subfonds in two series:

- Audiotape Sound Recordings

- Gramophone and Long Play Disc Recordings
