Description

Group involved in the trip by IDFLS staff to the old sheepwashing place on Outgang Beck at Thornton Rust ( Wensleydale). The group includes a local boy, Stewart Sanderson (2nd from left), Stanley Ellis (3rd from left), farmers involved in the sheepwashing (with back to the camera and right), and Werner Kissling (only just visible behind the farmers).

Biography or history

This slide forms part of a series of photographs, sound recordings, and film made by IDFLS staff on an outing to see sheep washing at Thornton Rust. Stewart Sanderson, Stanley Ellis, Ingemar Liman, and Werner Kissling were all present on this trip, which saw the revival of the custom of sheep washing in Outgang Beck for the first time since 1935.
