Description

Sheep in stone sheep fold at the old sheep washing place on Outgang Beck at Thornton Rust ( Wensleydale). One of a strip of six contact prints.


The contact prints of sheep washing on Outgang Beck were not originally held in the Photo File with the mounted sheep washing prints.

Biography or history

This photograph forms part of a series of photographs, film and sound recordings made by IDFLS staff on an outing to see sheep washing at Thornton Rust. Stewart Sanderson, Stanley Ellis, Ingemar Liman and Werner Kissling were all present on this trip, which saw the revival of the custom of sheep washing in Outgang Beck for the first time since 1935.
