Description
A study of the dialect spoken in the village of Donisthorpe, based on data collected from three local informants.
An introduction to the village and the informants is followed by five chapters which present a descriptive account of the sounds of the dialect of Donisthorpe, describe the development of Middle English sounds in the living dialect (vowels of stressed and unstressed syllables), describe changes in consonantal sounds from the Old and Middle English periods down to 1968, and present a tabular summary of Old English, Middle English, Scandinavian and Old French equivalents of the stressed vowels in the Donisthorpe dialect. A Word List is included. Four black and white postcard prints show views of the village.
