Description

M.A. thesis based on fieldwork carried out in 1960 in sixteen localities in Radnorshire, Breconshire, Glamorganshire and Monmouthshire. For part of the Monmouthshire material, the collector draws on the work of Donald Sykes, who investigated the dialects of four localities in the county in 1955.

The study's eight chapters comprise a topographical introduction to Wales, descriptions of the localities investigated and the informants, an overview of published works dealing with dialects in the four counties, a discussion of problems arising from the collector's investigation, and sections dealing with consonants, vowels, diphthongs and triphthongs, lexicon, morphology and syntax. A Word List (with addenda) and personal name, place name and subject indexes are also included.
