Description
This subseries consists of duplicate copies of the response books held at LAVC/SED/2/2. As the fieldwork information recorded in these duplicate response books quite literally duplicates the informant responses recorded in the originals, no file-level records have been created for them. Those wishing to view information on the contents of the duplicate response books are requested to consult the relevant records in the subseries containing the original response books, LAVC/SED/2/2 .
As the response books were duplicated prior to editorial work being undertaken, the duplicate copies do not include editorial notes and markings relating to the production of the Basic Material volumes. They do include some markings made following the actual fieldwork (see note in LAVC/SED/2/2).
There are additional unbound copies of response books for some localities in Staffordshire, and for Alresford (Hampshire). The additional copies for Staffordshire consist of duplicated versions of the response books for Warslow, Mow Cop, Barlaston, Mavesyn Ridware, Lapley, Wigginton and Himley.
Provenance
It is possible that these copies were made for those working on editing and interpreting them to work remotely.
The additional duplicate response book for Alresford was copied from the original in ms. in two distinct hands. Unlike the original response book, the responses of informants to the various parts of the SED questionnaire are given in questionnaire book and number order by individual informant. The diagrams and sketches found in the original response book are not duplicated. The responses are preceded by a page giving biographical details for each informant, and phonetic notes on the dialect of Alresford. The phonetic notes are included in the original response book, but the biographical details are not. Filed with the copy of the response book is an ms. time sheet compiled by undergraduate students P. N. Werth and Robin Langton. It would appear that these students were responsible for making this additional copy response book. The reason for this copy being made is not known.
System of arrangement
The duplicate response books are housed in magazine files in order of SED county and locality. The reference codes assigned to files and individual response books reflects the numbering assigned to SED counties and localities.

Those wishing to consult the SED response books should, in the first instance, request the duplicate copies held in this subseries, as many of the originals are fragile.
