Description

Undergraduate theses by students of Armstrong College on the dialects of ten localities in Northumberland. Each of the theses focusses on the phonology of the individual dialects.

Biography or history

The theses were written under the supervision of Harold Orton, who subsequently indexed parts of the data for the Armstrong College Survey of Northumbrian Dialects. There were initially eleven theses in this part of the Orton Corpus. J. E. Waugh's thesis, 'The Dialect of East Coanwood in the Valley of the South Tyne (Northumberland)', (1933) cannot be traced, although it was included in Orton's indexing (see Rydland, 'The Orton Corpus', p. 7 and 10).

System of arrangement

Arranged chronologically, and alphabetically by author.
