The Virgin Mary kneels in front of the altar. The High Priest, Simeon, is holding the Christ Child, who sits on the altar. Joseph stands in front of it holding a long candle and his staff. A handmaiden behind him carries three turtle doves in a basket, offered as sacrifice for the Purification of the Virgin, an event likely to have taken place at the same time.
