Description
An exceedingly variable work. It first appeared in 3 volumes, vol. 1 being dated 1835, and published by Tallis & Co., Green arbour Court, Old Bailey. Vols. 2 and 3 had no date and were published, by John Tallis, 15 St. John's Lane, Smithfield, and L. Tallis 3 Jewin Street, City, respectively. It was at first illustrated by reprints of G. Cole's maps of 1810 (The British atlas). Later it appeared in 4, 8, 9 and 11 volumes, but the printed text remained uniform throughout. About 1842 the Cole maps began to be replaced by new ones, with the imprint "Drawn & engraved by J. Archer Pentonville London". Cf. Whitaker: The Harold Whitaker Collection... Univ. of Leeds, 1947, p. 88.
Many of the unlikely railways shown on the maps of the [1844] edition have been erased, and others, often equally unlikely, engraved in their stead. Cf. Whitaker, p. 88.
Vol. 9 is a supplement, with title: An alphabetical chronology of remarkable events, with copious explanatory notes, by Leonard Townsend.
Indexed in: This edition not recorded by Chubb.
