Biography or history

Patrick Edward McEvoy was born in Seaforth, Lancashire, on 18 April 1881. Before the war he ran the grocery company P. McEvoy Sons & Pinnington Ltd. in Liverpool. The company specialised in American food. Patrick, known as Pat, served as Squadron Quarter Master Sergeant, King Edward's Horse, on the Western Front, 1915-1919. After a period of hospitalisation, Patrick married Mabel Ambler in Gloucester on 15 July 1918. Toward the end of the war Patrick was a prisoner of war in Mainz. During the war Mabel did voluntary service in military canteens in France. After the war Patrick and Mabel lived at Abbeyland in Settle, Yorkshire, and had six children. Patrick died on 8 December 1952. Mabel died on 5 September 1978.

Ernest Ambler was born on 18 May 1892 in Bradford, Yorkshire. Ernest was one of Mabel's brothers. In World War One Ernest served with the Royal Fusiliers and was a lieutenant in the West Yorkshire Regiment. He became a major in the army. In 1931 Ernest married Vivian Olga Flemmich. He died in Harrogate in 1958.

The person named Norman mentioned in many of the letters is John Norman Ambler (1889-1967) Mabel's oldest brother.
