Bindings
Binding of full calf over pasteboard, probably eighteenth-century, but retaining the upper and lower covers, late fifteenth-century. The older upper and lower covers are blind-tooled with a border of multiple fillets containing frames filled with rectangular and lozenge-shaped tools of stylised foliage and a central panel filled with flower motifs. The blind-tooling is much worn. The newer spine has five raised bands and is blind-tooled with a criss-cross pattern. Gold-tooled in the second panel are the words: Turrecremata Expositio Psalterii. Gold-tooled at the base of the spine are the place and date: Mainz 1478. The fourth panel contains the Brotherton Collection stamp in gold. The board edges and turn-ins are blind-tooled with hatching. Written in ink manuscript on the head-edge: Psalteriu[m]. Watermark on the first blank leaf of a shield containing crossed swords. Size: 295 x 224mm. Leaf size: 290 x 215mm.
Provenance
In black ink manuscript, late fifteenth-century, above the colophon on leaf [197r]: Belloforti de petro liber est q[ui] vibertj.
Cutting from a sale catalogue on the front pastedown. Written in pencil manuscript on the cutting: Maggs. Cat. 1925.
Coloured armorial bookplate of Sir Edward Allen Brotherton on the front pastedown. The book was most likely acquired before 17 June 1929 when Brotherton was created Baron Brotherton of Wakefield.
