Sender: Brontë, Charlotte

Recipient: Williams, W S

Letters: 2

Date(s): 21 Aug 1849; 20 Nov 1849

Location: BC MS 19c Bronte C5a, unbound

Category: 19c1 Female

Note: 1) 1«pp. 8vo. Discussing a title for her second great work "Shirley". "I can only write very briefly at present ... to decide about the title of the book." "If I remember rightly my Cornhill critics objected to "Hollow's Mill", nor do I now find it appropriate. It might rather be called "Fieldhead" - though I think "Shirley" would perhaps be the best title. "Shirely" I fancy has turned out the most prominent and peculiar character in the work" "Cornhill may decide between "Fieldhead" and "Shirley".

2) 1«pp. 8vo. A most interesting letter asking that a copy of "Shirley" be sent to Harriet Martineau, of whom she speaks most highly; further concerning her admiration for Mrs Gaskell, discovering an affinity in her to her sister Emily.
