Arthur Kitching was born in Sheffield. He spent a year at Sheffield College of Art, but was otherwise self-taught. The places he lived, and the people around him, provided the main focus of his work. He was the first curator of Ilkley's Manor House Museum and Art Gallery, and achieved rightful recognition both for his own work and for his comradely support of other artists.
