Profile
William Hey was born in Leeds in 1796, son to the surgeon William Hey (1772-1844) and Isabella Hudson. He followed in the family tradition by becoming a surgeon, starting his training as an apprentice to his father at the family private practice in Albion Street.
Hey was elected surgeon at the Leeds General Infirmary after the retirement of his father in 1830 and remained there until 1851. He then joined forces with a number of other medical practitioners to set up the Leeds School of Medicine in 1831. Hey lectured in surgery and was president of the School between 1836-1837. Hey was one of the original 300 Fellows of the Royal College of Surgeons in 1843.
He married Rebecca Roberts in 1821 and had no children. He died on 10 May 1875 and was buried in the family vault at St Paul's Church crypt, Leeds.
