Profile

Georg Ludwig Oeder was born in 1694 at Schopfloch bei Dinkelsbühl. He studied in Jena and graduated as Master of Arts in 1714. He taught at Heilbronn and then Ansbach, where in 1730 he became Rector. In 1737 he also became Dean of Feuchtwangen. He received his doctorate in theology from Erlangen in 1743. He died in 1760.

Oeder published several works of biblical scholarship and was notable for bringing a critical approach to his study of the biblical texts. He questioned the authenticity of several books in the canon and was the first to query whether the Book of Ezekiel did in fact represent a single cohesive work, suggesting that the last nine chapters might in fact form a separate writing.
