Vittorio Bertini came from the village of Sant’ Ambrogio in the Susa valley, about 25km. from Turin in Piedmont, North Italy, where his family had some prominence. He obtained a doctorate in theology from Turin in 1774. In 1781 he was the parish priest responsible for Cresto, also in the Susa valley, when the bishop made his formal visitation. Between 1805 and 1808 he published 5 volumes of sermons, explaining the gospel reading for each Sunday of the year.
