Profile

Freiherr Carl Joseph von Adelsheim was born in Königshofen (Bavaria) on 10th March 1790. He served as an officer in the army of the state of Wurttemberg from 1809 to 1813 and was enrolled with a pension in the Ehren-Invalidencorps (Honorary Disability Corps) in 1821.

In 1846, he published a collection of word puzzles (444 Charaden, Räthsel und Dergleichen; nebst 100 Wortspielen Neue Lieferung. Merkentheim: Thomm, 1846).

He was a keen collector of antiquities from the medieval, renaissance and baroque periods, including sculpture, paintings, pottery, furniture, ivories and other objets d’art. On his death in 1864, he bequeathed his collection to the town of Bad Merkentheim. This now forms part of the Deutschordensmuseum (German Teutonic Order Museum) in that town.
