Description

Unpublished presumably autograph work of church music in eight parts: the author states that the first part is derivative, while the rest are original. The first part concerns the history of music. The second part discusses scales, intervals, time and common musical jargon; the third and fourth parts give the tunes and words to various metrical psalms. Parts five and six have the tunes and words to numerous hymns and canticles; and parts seven and eight have anthems for various occasions.

Bound in contemporary calf, blind-tooled covers.

Biography or history

William Dennis worked as a schoolmaster in the Lincolnshire village of Fleet. He is virtually unknown as a musician.

Provenance

Possibly given by William Dennis to Charles Berige, LLD, Rector of Algarskirk, to whom the manuscript is dedicated (dedication dated 28 August 1753). Given on 22 March 1789 by 'Mr Flowers' to 'J.G.' (inscription on second front fly-leaf). Stamp 'Chas. Hatchett' on half title, presumably Charles Hatchett (1765-1847), FRS, chemist, musician and collector (see ODNB). His library, and probably this book amongst it, was sold by Puttick and Simpson in March and April 1848.
