Description

A small 1877 Clarendon Press Series edition of 'The Merchant of Venice', cut up and interleaved within a larger bound notebook on which extensive notes about the play have been written in manuscript (in pencil and in ink of various colours, probably all by Forsyth). Duplicated handwritten notes about the play, on loose sheets and in another hand, are inserted.

Biography or history

David Forsyth (1844-1934), a pioneering educationist, was a successful headmaster of the Leeds Central High School (1889-1918), and received an honorary degree from the University of Leeds in 1915 for his extensive contribution to improving education in higher grade schools. His interest in Shakespeare culminated in his edition of 'Julius Caesar' in 1899. For fuller details of the life and achievements of David Forsyth see the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography.
