Bindings
Early twentieth-century binding of full yellow straight-grained goatskin over pasteboard by Hains. The crest of James P. R. Lyell (1871-1949), featuring an erect arm holding a short sword, is gold-tooled at the centre of both the upper and lower covers. The spine has two raised bands and gold-tooled between the bands are the words: Palladius - Epigrammata - Venice, J. B. de Sessa, 1498. Size: 221 x 163mm. Leaf size: 215 x 155mm.
Provenance
The crest of James P. R. Lyell (1871-1948), featuring an erect arm holding a short sword, is gold-tooled at the centre of both the upper and lower covers.
A loose cutting from a sale catalogue is inserted at the front of the book and gives the price as £8 8s.
In pencil manuscript on the back pastedown: Perfect. Bernard Quaritch Ltd. F.S. Ferguson 4.iv.1925.
Coloured armorial bookplate of Lord Brotherton on the front pastedown and small black and white armorial bookplate of Sir Edward Allen Brotherton on the verso of the front free endpaper. The book was most likely acquired before 17 June 1929 when Brotherton was created Baron Brotherton of Wakefield.
