Description

Items M/1, M/3 and M/4 are verse compilations partly in the hand of Sarah or John Mould but also added to by others, principally fellow-pupils or members of staff at Ackworth School. M/2 contains notes on many topics (mainly scientific or historical), wholly in the hand of John Mould. Many of the items in the verse notebooks are dated, with the name of the copyist given and sometimes the place of writing.

With the exception of item M/2, each book is written in a variety of hands. M/1 has calligraphic half-title, Sarah Ann Mould, Gildersome, 1855; M/2, John Edward Mould, 8 mo. 31, 1858; M/3, a later pencilled note, John Edward Mould, Gildersome, 1.1866; M/4, Sarah Ann Mould, Ackworth School, 10th mo. 1852.

Biography or history

Sarah and John Mould's parents, Edward and Betty Mould, moved to Gildersome in 1840 when Edward became caretaker of the Quaker meeting house there. Their children were sent to Ackworth School at the expense of the Monthly Meeting (see Jean E. Mortimer, "Quakers in Gildersome", 1990). Sarah (b. 1840) was at Ackworth from 1851 to 1855, John (b. 1845) from 1855 to 1860.

Provenance

The exercise books apparently remained with Sarah and John Mould's mother, Betty, who moved to Bolton, Lancashire, where she died in 1891.
