Description
Comprises personal notes made by Joseph Bufton, between 1664 and 1716, on blank pages and margins of a printed almanac 'Goldsmith's Almanack 1686'. These include ordinances of the Company of Clothiers Fullers, Baymakers, and New Drapers in the town of Coggeshall; list of registered names of those textile workers that follow these ordinances; miscellaneous verses; accounts of trade meetings; list of 'Wardens for the ffullers' 1659-1698; list of 'ffeoffees for ye fullers' 1659-1698; inventories of personal possessions; miscellaneous cash transactions; lists of local weavers; and accounts of local and historical events. Kept with the diaries are four letters from Sarah Unwin of Coggeshall to her son, Stephen Unwin, dated between 1822 and 1825 (8ff.).
Bound in worn stained vellum. Two metal clasps remain. Held in a modern custom-made case entitled 'Joseph Bufton's Diary 3', together with two more of his diaries (MSS 8 and 9). Written in a late secretary hand.

Joseph Bufton was a weaver in Coggeshall, Essex.

On [63v] are written the names Christopher Pemberton 1734, D W Peel (?) 1735, and Sarah White 1732.
