Description
Comprises the 1847 edition of the 'Life of Crabbe' re-bound into 6 vols in 1903 by Broadley. They are extra-illustrated by the insertion of numerous portraits, poems, watercolour views, and maps, together with autograph letters of Crabbe and autograph letters from Crabbe's friends, associates and contemporaries, and with an accompanying appendix volume of similar material and some printed items. The box lettered 'Miscellanea' contains Crabbe's notebooks for 1812, 1814, 1820, 1825 and 1826; a published 'Memoir of Crabbe' (1832) and his 'Poetical Works' (1836); and a portrait, notes and press cuttings about Crabbe.
The quarto volumes are covered with green cloth and bound in pink half-leather with gold-tooled lines and gilt lettering on the spines which reads: 'Life/ of/ Crabbe/ by his son/ extra/ illustrated/ [volume number]/ MDCCCCIII'. The box has been designed to match them visually. There is marbling on the inside covers and endpapers of all the volumes.
