Comprises 2 autograph letters, 1 from Andrew Spottiswoode to an unnamed recipient dated 17 November 1818, 1 from William Spottiswoode to an unnamed recipient dated 26 April 1875 (both with transcripts), 1 small portrait photograph of William Spottiswoode as President of the Royal Society, and an obituary on him extracted from 'The Times' for 28 June 1883.


The material was formerly bound into a volume containing also transcripts of the letters, which is now shelved in a separate author/alphabetical sequence following the main sequence of Miscellaneous Letters.

Biography or history

Andrew Spottiswoode was the founder of the firm of printers and father of William Spottiswoode (1825-1883), the mathematician and physicist, president of the Royal Society. For fuller details of the latter's life and achievements see the Dictionary of National Biography.
