Description

Comprises 1 autograph letter from Beresford-Hope to Rev. J. Wilson dated 19 June 1860 (with a transcript), an engraved portrait of him extracted from the press, a short biography of him while still alive likewise extracted from the press, as is also a short anonymous poem entitled 'On the recent appointment of Mr. Hope as a Charity Commissioner'.


The material was formerly bound into a volume containing also a transcript of the letter, which is now shelved in a separate author/alphabetical sequence following the main sequence of Miscellaneous Letters.

Biography or history

Alexander James Beresford Beresford-Hope (1820-1887) was a Tory M.P. and involved in church politics. He was also interested in architecture and wrote 'The English cathedral of the nineteenth century', 1861.
