Description

Comprises 3 autograph letters from Bennett to Jabez Hogg dated 16 February 1865-29 October 1883 (with transcripts), together with a stamped-addressed envelope for the latter, 1 portrait photograph of him dated January 1879 by Maull & Co., London, 1 press-cutting concerning him as Executive Commissioner for Ceylon with a pen and ink sketch of him, and 1 pamphlet outlining in detail his life and work as a naturalist, written while he was still alive and printed for private circulation.


The material was formerly bound into a volume containing also transcripts of the letters, which is now shelved in a separate author/alphabetical sequence following the main sequence of Miscellaneous Letters.

Biography or history

George Bennett (1804-1893), surgeon and naturalist, trained in Britain, but from 1836 onwards, spent much of his life in Sydney, Australia. He also acted as Executive Commissioner for Ceylon. Today, he is known chiefly for his work and publications in the field of natural history.
