Description

1 autograph letter from Sister Isabel Mary to Mr A. Raphael dated 25 April 1911 (with a transcript), and 2 press-cuttings from the Illustrated London News for 20 July 1872, being a print of Miss Bateman in a scene from 'Medea in Corinth' at the Lyceum Theatre, together with a brief comment on her performance then entitled 'Medea'.


The material was formerly bound into a volume containing also a transcript of the letter, which is now shelved in a separate author/alphabetical sequence following the main sequence of Miscellaneous Letters.

Biography or history

Sister Isabel Mary, of the Community of Saint Mary the Virgin, Wantage, was in her younger days a celebrated Victorian tragic actress at the Lyceum Theatre and known as Isabel Emilie Bateman. Her life story is told in her book entitled 'Acquisition; From theatre to convent', published in 1936.
